The Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), prototype for this model, is widespread across much of Europe and far into Siberia and prefers nutrient-poor, often sandy soils. In Germany its natural share of the forest stands is relatively small; the large areas covered by pine today are mainly the result of forestry plantations. Under favourable site conditions the species can reach heights of around 45–48 metres in nature. Windswept pines are usually lower, often crooked solitary trees whose growth form is strongly influenced by wind and harsh site conditions.
